About this Program

The benefits of advanced lighting that impact the occupants of a building can now be more important than the financial gains realized from energy savings. Today, many LED retrofits that replace high-performance fluorescent or existing LED do not offer substantial energy savings or rebates that have justified projects in previous years. Even if they were zero watts, they would often not save enough energy to be cost-effective. Smart companies are now also assessing the non-financial benefits a new investment can provide, and in the case of lighting, non-energy benefits can help gain project approval. The Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance recently stated that 75% of the benefits of energy-efficient projects could be non-energy benefits.

This program focuses on the non-energy benefits when related to advanced lighting retrofit projects. It covers in detail the human-centric experience of the building’s occupants, including effects on circadian rhythms, the visual quality of light, biophilia, and environmentally friendliness, and also the benefits provided through advanced controls. Non-energy lighting benefits include:

  • Biophilia
  • Human Centric Lighting
  • Smart Lighting
  • Certifications
  • Going Green
  • Reduced Maintenance

    Learning Objectives & Take-Aways:

    • Understand the significance of various non-energy benefits.
    • Realize that therapeutic use highly regulated LED products are worth ten times more than standard LED products with no claims.
    • Delve into the 3-30-30 rule and other tools for non-energy benefits.
    • Start to learn how to design lighting and controls for non-energy benefits.
